2008 Earth Day Art & Science Fair Project

This April, projects on recycling beverage container and preventing stormwater run off pollution will earn $500 for one Morgan Hill classroom, and over $1,200 is up for grabs for Morgan Hill students in this competition.

The Fifth Annual Earth Day Art & Science Fair, sponsored by the City of Morgan Hill, will be held at the Community and Cultural Center on Tuesday, April 22, 2008. Funded by the California Department of Conservation, the fair is designed to educate and motivate the community to recycle and reuse drink containers, like water bottles and soda cans.

Morgan Hill students are invited to submit projects that promote the recycling, reduction or reuse of drink containers or teaches about preventing stormwater runoff pollution. The three judging categories are: Grades K-3, grades 4-8 and grades 9-12. Students may work in teams as long as they are in the same age category or individually. Students can review the entry form for some great ideas or use the following suggestions for inspiration. For example, students can:

  • Show samples of clean water and water that is running through our streets and into the Bay.
  • Grow plants using different amounts of water and show what the difference in growth is.
  • Make a coloring or activity book that teaches kids how important it is to recycle drink containers instead of throwing them in the trash.
  • Use drink containers, such as juice bottles, water bottles or soda cans, to create an art project: make a sculpture or a collage – whatever you can imagine.
  • Click here for more project ideas.

The California Department of Conservation reports that a single aluminum can, if recycled, saves enough electricity to run a television for nearly three hours. Californians recycled 59% of the 20.2 billion aluminum, glass, plastic and bi-metal drink containers purchased last year, continuing to lead the nation in the growth of beverage container recycling. The Earth Day Art & Science Fair helps to focus attention on the goal of recycling the remaining 41%.

Entry forms will be sent to all Morgan Hill Schools. Students can check with their teacher or school office. Forms can also be downloaded from this website – click here to get the form.
